'In 2008, I became preoccupied with the racist comments people make about articles published on the Internet. I had long ignored the comments sections on Web pages, but then I began to take notice of the ones I saw on NYDailynews.com because I read it regularly for local news and because I have been writing for it for many years.
I dove in with an open mind, reading what turned out to be mostly negative comments, seemingly in response to an article in which the subject was identified as African-American. The writers did not use sugarcoated, pretty, or cutesy words.
The comments were expressions of pure, unadulterated hatred. ...
